Hot spot detection over 100 km with 2 meter resolution in a Raman- assisted Brillouin distributed sensor

We have developed a long-range Brillouin distributed sensor featuring 100 km measuring distance with 2 meter resolution. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a high-resolution setup reaches the barrier of 100 km measurement range. The key improvements with respect to previous configurations are explained.

Raman-assisted DPP-BOTDA sensor employing Simplex coding with sub-meter scale spatial resolution over 93 km standard SMF

Differential pulse-width-pair BOTDA technique is combined with bi-directional Raman amplification and Simplex coding to achieve sub-meter spatial resolution over very long sensing distances. Numerical simulations are used to optimize the power levels of the Raman pumps, avoiding nonlinear effects and pump depletion. Distortions in the Brillouin gain spectrum due to acoustic-wave pre-excitation ...

Brillouin optical time-domain analysis over a 240 km-long fiber loop with no repeater

In this paper we combine the use of optical pulse coding and seeded second-order Raman amplification to extend the sensing distance of Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensors. Using 255-bit Simplex coding, the power levels of the Raman pumps and the Brillouin pump and probe signals were adjusted in order to extend the real physical sensing distance of a BOTDA sensor up to 120 km ...

Brillouin optical time-domain analysis assisted by second-order Raman amplification.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new method to extend the range of Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) systems. It exploits the virtual transparency created by second-order Raman pumping in optical fibers. The idea is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated in a 50 km fiber. By working close to transparency, we also show that the measurement length of the BO...

Limitation in Brillouin Time-domain Analysis Due to Raman Scattering

In the past few years, Brillouin sensing using either spontaneous or stimulated Brillouin scattering has proven to be an efficient tool for the measurement of physical quantities such as temperature, strain, local birefringence or core dopant concentration along a fiber. The Brillouin effect is the non-linear process showing the lowest threshold; however an increase of the involved optical powe...
